Industrial Design

The world around us is becoming increasingly complex and anyone who wants to be an industrial designer has to cultivate the ability to cope with increasing levels of complexity in design projects as well.

In projects with multifarious and sometimes conflicting wills and ideas the ability to synthesise and the intuition of the designer is put to the test. He/she must grasp the entire project and its various priorities but also make appropriate distinctions and become engrossed in the details that play a decisive role for the design as a whole. By alternately zooming in to work with specific details and then zooming out the designer can reflect over the total outcome.

Now when students choose their degree projects themselves, knowledge, experience and well developed judgement are required to match their specialisations and limitations to their personal commitment and the ten weeks at their disposal.

What they all have in common is that they have defined the main features of a design process and a number of explicit methods. Moreover, each design student has developed an individual way of thinking and there is a creative aspect to the process. This more implicit and intuitive knowledge evolves as the designer gradually extends his or her experience. In enabling both rational methodology and intuition to interact, the designer can combine each aspect of a project to form a synthesis.

Ulrica Bohné, Senior Lecturer in Industrial Design
