Storytelling

Calculating the Prize of Exile is the title of a degree project from the master class Storytelling. This is subject of topical importance for a great many more people than its author, Nino Biniashvili.

Konstfack is no longer what it once was – almost exclusively a school for children from the Swedish middle classes. Since 2007 the doors of Konstfack have been open to the world. The change has been dramatic: the majority of this year’s more than one hundred applicants for the fourteen places in the Storytelling master class come from outside Sweden. We have applicants from China, Iran, Taiwan, Turkey, Thailand and Chile – to name but a few. The graduates this year are from eight countries and several also have dual ethnic affiliation.

A totally different form of border transgression is immediately obvious. The master’s programme in Storytelling is offered by the Department of Graphic Design and Illustration/GDI but our students cannot be categorised under these disciplines alone. We maintain our own and our students’ right to define what we do beyond these concepts. We encourage the students to seek out borderline forms of genres, expressions and contexts. The outcome is that they also work with animated films, spatial installations, sound art, photography, children’s programmes, visual narratives, cartoon art and many other genres. There is room for narrative in every discipline!

Can we then see any trace of this internationalisation in the themes of this year’s degree projects? Judge for yourself: they deal with science, dance, work, travel, ennui, music, perception and parallel universes. One thing that clearly recurs is intense fascination with nature. As a possibility or threat. One very remarkable example is Killian Eng’s suggestive animated film that seems to have predicted the black cloud currently paralysing air traffic over Europe.

Mysterious clouds or not: the 2010 graduates from Storytelling will soon be flying over the world. We wish you every success!

Vi önskar er all lycka!
