Jewellery + Corpus

A Subjective Object
(An attempt to remain objective about the subject)

An objective fact is a truth that remains true everywhere, independent of human feelings and thoughts. In the exam work it represents the definition of the object as jewellery or corpus, the size, proportion and the different materials used. It is a fact that Bernhard Stimpfl-Abele’s work is made of bread and metal and that Roberta Burchardt uses animal skin. It is also a fact that both artists define their work as jewellery and therefore the objects are jewellery, disconcerting as this might seem to some.

A subjective fact is one that is only true for certain people. It is the perception of what we see and refers to a specific interpretation of experiences. It is a subjective fact that Nicolas Cheng’s work expresses the purifying beauty of nothingness and that Dana Hakim’s brooches are amulets for contemporary society.
When we embrace artistic expression, or art in itself, objective fact can only serve as a bridge to interpretation. We might accept the fact that a piece of jewellery, although alien to this category, belongs here per definition, and this acceptance might bring us a step closer to the artist. To understand the work however we need to embrace the artistic expression, not with knowledge of the artist, but from our personal perspective; with feelings, beliefs and desires.

Immanuel Kant argued that we can know nothing about the true nature of the "Ding an sich", other than that it exists.
The existence of the work of the exam students is not a question of fulfilling their educational assignment: it is the individual need of expression that leads to the creation. Maki Okamoto created more than one hundred cups in the attempt to understand the human relation to and personification of an object. Lisa Björke created three-dimensional substance out of metal, plastic and textile, describing the insubstantiality of dreams.

It means that artistic expression and the work of the exam students cannot be understood by adopting a logical approach nor through the wish to understand the state of things as they actually exist. Each work was created because an artist, a human being with experiences, feelings, dreams and failures, wanted it to exist.

This is an objective fact.

I hope it guides you to subjective enjoyment of the wonderful objects created.
