Touch the invisible

Sight has higher status in our modern society than all the other senses, and the visual aspects of the world around us are becoming ever more important. Huge flat panel TV sets, internet – with mainly visual information – and the new wave of 3D films are becoming more and more popular day by day.

My Master’s degree project is about taking hold of things and touching. The tactile sense is vital. Without touch one can die. There are cameras that can see better than the human eye and microphones that hear better than the human ear, but no technology in the world can surpass the tactile sense.

I have reflected on what it is that makes the hand want to touch, and how one might be able to deceive the tactile sense in a similar way to that of optical illusions with regard to the eye.
