Textile in the Expanded Field

Writing the texts for a class of master’s students always arouses reflection on the complexity of our experience of time. On the one hand it seems a long time since our nine students began their two-year master’s programme in Textile in the Expanded Field; a great deal has happened. On the other hand the feeling that we had our first meeting only yesterday is just as strong: two years is a remarkably short time.

The students entered the programme with a desire to explore new contexts and aspire to more than they had already achieved. In the artistic process we can never predict the outcome in advance. This is where the paradox lies: it is not possible to understand from the beginning what we need to learn. Only by starting on what we do not yet understand can we learn. This is like an experiment but at the same time it is important in the creation of meaning.

In this year’s graduate class we meet nine students who knew that it was the expanded field of textiles that they wanted to explore. They came with a variety of backgrounds, experiences and histories, and had graduated from different programmes. They have been faithful to existing contexts but also challenged accepted boundaries. In their work they have endeavoured to define and devise strategies for the contexts in which they wish to pursue their careers.

At this year’s spring exhibition we meet examples of how the use of textiles, processes and methods enable a multitude of approaches. Expression that wants to expand concepts and perhaps quite simply claim new areas. We see works that explore craftsmanship and creation, textile images, what arises when textile encounters spatial restraints: as sculptural elements or creating patterns. We perceive works that focus on the actual experience of the material as well as those which take the body and garments as their point of departure. Nine different projects grounded in or springing from textiles, but where dislocations and shifts have also taken place: an expanded field of textiles quite simply.
